Player Evaluation Process & Schedule

Player Evaluation Process & Schedule

Our Evaluation Philosophy

At Cold Lake Soccer Association (CLSA), we follow a player-centred development philosophy based on the Canada Soccer Long-Term Player Development (LTPD) model. Our focus is on the growth and development of each individual player, not solely on winning games. While competition is valued, our priority is helping players reach their full potential — technically, tactically, physically, and mentally.

Continuous Player Observation

CLSA technical coaches monitor players throughout the indoor and outdoor seasons. By regularly attending practices and games, our technical team gains a well-rounded understanding of each player’s abilities, progress, and development needs before, during, and after the evaluation period.

Coaching Requirements

  • The Travel (Tier 4) Team Head Coach for each age group will be confirmed before evaluations begin.
    • Coaches must meet all coaching certification and training requirements before the start of the season.
    • Travel team coaches are expected to attend all practices, games, and tournaments as per the seasonal schedule.

Formal Player Evaluations

  • All Tier 4 player evaluations are conducted and led by CLSA technical coaches.
    • Any player wishing to try out for a Tier 4 travel team must attend their scheduled evaluation session.
    • Players will be evaluated on technical ability, game understanding, athleticism, effort, and coachability.
    • Based on assessment results, players will be placed in either:
    - Tier 4 Travel Program - Competitive play, travel required, higher commitment, and cost.
    - House League Program - Local play, development-focused, reduced travel and cost.

Special Considerations
• All try-out fees and outstanding account balances must be paid in full before a player will be allowed to participate in evaluations.

Travel Team Commitment

Tier 4 (Travel) Program participants should expect:
• Two practices per week plus one in house game.
• Travel within the Lakeland League for league play on week days or weekends within the district.
• Attendance at team-selected tournaments, including at least two out-of-district events.
• Adherence to CLSA’s player and parent code of conduct.
